Hermann Koch has a thorough technical understanding and an eye for detail, but unfortunately, he is rather inept when it comes to actually building things. Fortunately for him and his clients, a patent attorney’s job is to understand inventions rather than to build them.
Hermann started his academic career at the Berlin school of medicine (Charité University Medicine Berlin), where he passed the preliminary medical examination (“Physikum”) in 2011. He then decided that his skills would be better suited in engineering, so he transferred to RWTH Aachen engineering school, where he studied mechanical engineering with a specialization in chemical and process engineering, graduating with a master’s degree (with distinction) in chemical engineering in 2017. During his studies, he worked for a US medical device manufacturer in Pittsburgh, PA, where he gained valuable practical experience in the field of medical modelling and simulation, in particular in physiological and pathological simulation of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. In addition, Hermann has valuable experience in the simulation and modelling of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and cellular signal transduction. During his studies, he received a full academic scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).
Hermann joined HOFFMANN EITLE’s mechanical engineering practice group as a trainee patent attorney in 2018, qualifying as a German Patent Attorney in 2022 and as a European Patent Attorney in 2023. He has since been involved in patent prosecution, opposition, appeal and nullity proceedings both before the European and German Patent Offices and courts, as well as freedom-to-operate assessments. His main interest lies in bridging the gaps between medicine, engineering and patent law.
In his spare time, Hermann enjoys all kinds of sports, as long as they can be done in the mountains. If there are no mountains nearby, swimming will do.
