Dorothea von Renesse

Committed team player with a focus on the bigger picture

Dr. Dorothea von Renesse is a partner in the Biotechnology practice group at HOFFMANN EITLE and has been passionately active in the patent field for over 25 years. She is convinced that being a patent attorney is one of the best professions out there. With enthusiasm, she collaborates with other creative minds to develop innovative solutions for her clients and readily takes the lead in complex cases and proceedings.

Her expertise ranges from supporting startups in building patent portfolios and handling complex opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO to working in international teams on cross-border litigation, including national nullity and infringement proceedings in Germany.

Technically, her primary focus is on small molecules and biologics/biosimilars, particularly in the fields of cancer and immunotherapy, as well as their formulations, dosages, and applications in selected patient groups. Dorothea studied biology with a focus on biochemistry and immunology at the Ruhr University Bochum and earned her Ph.D. at the University of Kassel.

As a recognized expert in Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs), Dorothea applies great creativity and experience in developing well thought-out strategies for filing, defending, and challenging SPCs in this highly specialized and dynamic legal field. Her contributions to preliminary rulings before the CJEU have significantly influenced legal developments in this area. Additionally, she is the author of numerous specialist publications and a sought-after speaker on SPC topics.

In her free time, she is dedicated to establishing an agricultural training center and kindergarten in Gambia, West Africa, and enjoys working on her husband's organic farm. Spending time with her adult sons is always a special highlight for her.
