He has found a passion in his profession in the field of intellectual property law; if this profession had not existed, he would have “invented” it

Jörn Verhasselt joined HOFFMANN EITLE's mechanical engineering practice group in February 2025 and advises national and international companies in patent prosecution, opposition and infringement proceedings. He prepares expert opinions and FTO analyses. His technical specialties include general (special) mechanical engineering, e.g. horizontal drilling technology and measuring methods for quality assurance, and technical applications in the life science and medical sectors, such as biotechnological analysis machines or stents. He is interested in both small and large hall-filling devices. He sees his role as providing strategic advice tailored to the needs of his clients.

Jörn is a lecturer at RWTH Aachen University for the ‘Intellectual Property’ module in the ‘Biomedical Engineering’ degree programme.

Before entering the field of intellectual property, Jörn studied physics at RWTH Aachen University with a focus on experimental solid state physics and completed his diploma thesis at the Jülich Research Centre in the field of semiconductor technology. He then switched to materials science and completed his doctorate at the Institute of Physical Metallurgy and Metal Physics at RWTH Aachen University as part of a scholarship from the Research Training Group ‘Melting, Solidification and Interfaces’. As an inventor, Jörn already had his first contact with patent law during his diploma thesis; he completed his training as a patent attorney following his doctorate in 2003.

In addition to his work in intellectual property law, Jörn is also interested in art and is enthusiastically involved in his children's activities, such as supporting them on the football pitch.
