A detailed thinker with a love of chemistry
Adam Lacy is a European and British Patent Attorney and a partner in the Chemistry practice group. He advises clients in a wide variety of technical fields within chemistry, including pharmaceutical, fluoropolymer and polymer chemistry, fine chemicals, and biomass processing. This work focuses particularly on opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office, where Adam regularly represents clients both defending and attacking existing patents.
Adam’s detailed knowledge of chemistry allows him a fluent technical understanding even in complex cases. As a strong believer that the devil is in the detail, he enjoys getting to grips with the inner workings of each invention so that he can truly work together with his clients to find the best solution for them.
Born in the Netherlands, Adam grew up and studied in the UK. A proud European, he worked in Switzerland and Germany for nearly a decade. His international experiences make him equally at home advising his clients in the US, Europe and Japan on navigating the patent system in Europe.
Adam studied at the University of Oxford 2003–2011, writing his Master's thesis in organic chemistry in 2007, followed by the GlaxoSmithKline funded doctoral thesis “Investigations of Methods for the Formation of Nitrogen-Carbon Bonds” in 2011 in the field of organic synthesis. He then held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich from 2011–2013, and worked in the field of organic electronic materials. His research resulted in numerous scientific publications.
During his free time, Adam enjoys cycling, reading and baking (as well as eating the results).
Since joining HOFFMANN EITLE, Adam has gained broad experience in patent work in a wide variety of technical fields within chemistry, including pharmaceutical chemistry, fluoropolymer and polymer chemistry, fine chemicals, and paper chemistry. He works primarily with examination, opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.
