David is a partner in the firm’s Electrical Engineering & IT Division, and has over 30 years’ experience counselling clients in patent matters. His practice focuses on the fields of medical devices, computing, software, IT, communications, electronics, physics and business methods. David has particular expertise in oppositions and appeals at the European Patent Office as well as proceedings at the Unified Patent Court.

As counsel to multinational companies, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups, David has a thorough understanding of the different requirements and pressures faced by each, and is committed to finding and providing the optimum strategy to deliver what the client needs.

David has experience in all areas of patent services, including drafting, filing and prosecuting applications in the UK, Europe and throughout the world, patent strategy and portfolio development, infringement and validity searches, evaluations and opinions, patent licensing and litigation.

David has particular expertise in inter-partes proceedings, both at the European Patent Office and the Unified Patent Court. At the latter, David has handled cases before the Munich, Paris and Hague Local Divisions as well as the Court of Appeal. 

Prior to becoming a patent attorney, David was a technical consultant with a leading consultancy firm, conducting projects in a wide range of technologies (including electronics, computers, communication systems, image processing and information technology) for clients including national and local government departments, international agencies and industrial companies in the UK and throughout Europe.

David was responsible for the 2011 UK High Court decision Halliburton Energy Services Inc. and The Comptroller General of Patents [2011] EWHC 2508 (Pat), which changed UK law on how the mental act exclusion in the UK Patents Act is applied to computer software inventions.

In May 2024, David was a lead attorney in the trial of the first case to be heard on the merits at the Paris Local Division of the Unified Patent Court.
